âSheâs finally asleep,â Reece said as he came out of the bedroom. âShe put up a fight and went down only after Iâd agreed to read her another bedtime story.â
Emily smiled, knowing it was time for her to leave. She needed a good nightâs sleep, too. Besides, Reece had only invited her along because Sophie had insisted on her joining them. An ache began in her chest and settled in her stomach. Tonight had been a bad idea. She was getting too attached to this child. Emily knew that when it was time for Reece and Sophie to leave, she would be hurt.
âWell, thank you for letting me intrude on your date.â She started for the door.
âItâs still early. What do you say to a cup of coffee?â
Tell him no and just leave, she ordered herself. âIâm not sure I should.â
He looked at her with those sexy dark eyes. âI need a favor.â
âSure.â Her heart was pounding in her chest as he filled two mugs and brought them to the coffee table.
âI added milk and one sugar,â he told her. âThatâs how you take it, isnât it?â
With a nod, she sank onto the sofa and cradled the warm cup in her hands.
He sat down next to her. âDoes the offer still stand about taking Sophie shopping? I know youâre busy now, but Sophie really needs some things.â
She was surprised. âNo problem,â she said. âWhat does she need?â
âWell, as you know, her wardrobe is pretty limited. And since Sophieâs been in school, sheâs been voicing an opinion on what she wants.â His gaze settled on Emily once again. âSix weeks ago, I could barely get her to say a word. Now, as youâve seen, sheâs become quite a chatterbox.â He shook his head as a smile creased his mouth. âShe reminds me a lot of Carrie.â
Emily could also see a flash of sadness on his eyes. âYou miss your sister, donât you?â
He shrugged. âI hadnât seen her in years, but she was pretty stubborn when she was Sophieâs age.â He glanced away as if to say he wasnât ready to talk about his past. âI know youâre busy, but Iâd appreciate any help.â
âSure. Iâm not expected at the ranch until the afternoon tomorrow. Why donât you make a list of things Sophie needs and Iâll take her shopping in the morning and then bring her out to the ranch after weâre finished.â
âI have to be out at the ranch by seven. Iâm doing a run-through on one of the scenes with Jenny Tate, but I should be free in the afternoon to take Sophie,â he said.
Emily tried not to react to the fact that Reece was going to spend time with the beautiful actress. âI watched Jenny the other day. She rides very well.â
âSheâs doing all her own riding, but we still have to choreograph it.â
Of course they did. Why wasnât she thinking logically? But was she supposed to believe that Reece hadnât noticed that Jennifer Tate was drop-dead gorgeous? Not her business.
